Organisation in case of a zombi attack

What's a zombi ?

We can separate zombi in two species : Contaminated and Living Dead.

Contaminated

In this case, we are confronted to really fast monsters, such as those encountered in the movie 28 days later and the whole trilogy (28 weeks later and 28 months later). These undead tend to die after a few days, the virus causing the zombi-symptome eating their organism. They can be killed like normal humans, despite their high resistance, a shot in the heart or the head is still able to send them to hell.

Living Dead

The second case is what we could call the holy zombi, or the Romero's zombi. It's the specie Romero described in his hexalogy (night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, ...). These monsters are slow, really slow. They only have a normal people's strength, and they have a very bad coordination, meaning they can't use tools for example. They can basically walk, push, pull or make any easy move, but nothing sophisticated. They will try to bite you, thus converting you into one of them. If you're wounded by a zombi, let your friends kill you (if you still got friends alive by then), or better, try to take the most undead you can with you into death, terrorists can be a good source of inspiration. We'll focus on this second kind of zombi.

How To Kill A Zombi ?

As we discussed before, we're only considering slow zombi. That's why slowing them becomes kind of useless. Shooting them in any body part apart from the head will do no harm to them, except for slowing them down. The only mean to get rid is to destroy the brain, for example by shooting a bullet in it. Cutting the head off (also called decapitation) is also a good way to destroy them.

Weapons

Blades

The blades are the easyest weapons to find in case of a contaminateion. You can find a knive in all Flurs in the HaDiKo, some even got their own in their room. The longer the blade, the less dangerous it'll be for you to kill zombi without getting too close to them.

Swords

Swords are really fun to use, you can probably find some in the haDiKo, ask for the AK Rollenspiel, but they are heavy, and you'll soon be exhausted !

Katana

The best compromised is also the Katana (japanese samourai sword). They are really light, cut like a razor and, most important of all, you look like a samourai when you wear one ! They can be more difficult to find, but there are still some people in the HaDiKo with a cheap Katana on the wall. But you'll have to use a good katana, not an aluminium reproduction. You'll have two ways to get a true zombicutter :

• Take the course Werkstoffkunde and master the art of materials. You'll be able to melt the good kind of steel needed to make a perfect blade, but you'll still need some stuff and a good workstation.
• Buy or steal one. A real Katana can cost several thousand euros, but it'll be worth it when the zombi arrive and your neighbour will get his fake katana's blade break after only 2-3 zombi heads !

Knives

As we said earlier, a knive is the universal weapon. The only inconvenient is that it's a close-contact weapon, you'll have to be really close to the zombi to use it. It is not a problem against a couple zombi, but once they'll be crawling like Maschinenbau students at a HiWi party, you'll need something bigger...

Contendant Weapons

Baseball Bat

This weapon is really easy to find and can be made of Wood or Aluminium. A bat doesn't cut, but make terrible impacts. You'll be able to explode the zombi heads, but strength will be needed, this means exhaustion will come soon enough.

Others

Anything you can find that deals damage : woodstick, a ladder (even if it isn't easy to use) ... Just remember the more destructive and lightweight the weapon is, the better.

Vinyl Records

If thrown by a seasoned pro, these have been shown to be rather effective at repelling the occasional onslaught of flesheating ex-coworkers. So go over to your favorite audiophile and start exercising that throwing arm. Remember, always aim for the head.

Fireweapons

These weapons are always used in movies, but they present 3 major inconvenients :

• first of all, you need to be able to shoot. It isn't just a question of aiming at a target, but to be used to and having experience.
• second, shooting makes a lot of noise, and zombi will converge to you as they will be alerted by the detonation.
• finally, you'll need ammunitions. Without his bullets, a machinegun is just a couple kg of useless metal (even if metal rocks !), so if you plan on getting a fireweapon, think of the munitions !

Pistol

They're the smallest firearms. They are not very heavy, making them easy to have with you at any time. The only inconvenients are that they only have a small destructive power, you'll have to aim really good to get a bullet in the head of a moving target (practive needed !), and you can only shot around 10 time. I'd still use a gun, because you'll have to deal with other humans in case of a Zombi attack, and there will be thieves and murderer, the gun'll give you a way to defend yourself and intimidate the oponents.

Rifle

The rifle has a bigger firepower than pistols, and have the advantage to have a long range. They're relatively easy to find in the country. Sniper rifle are the best if you have a fortified position, while .22 cvan be used at all time. The main inconvenient is the weight, both the fire cadence and the reload time.

Machinegun

They're just the best : heavy destructive power, a good ratio munition/weight. The munition, on the other hand aren't easy to find, you'll need a military base or an armurery to get some, so spare them !

Bazooka, grenades and other war weapons

Being able of a real carnage makes them extremely usefull. You can clear and alley with one of these toys, but they're as hard to find as milk in one of the Hadiko bar, so if you get your hand on it, don't hesitate to use them. Be aware that some weapons require training in order to use them !

Personal Protection

As we know, zombi will try to bite you in order to infect you. But several zombi can tear you apart. First of all, you'll be in an apocalyptic world. This means the environnement will be dangerous, there will be glass on the streets, fire etc. Try to get some lasting clothes : leather is very good, you can find some jackets with metal reinforcement in garages. Jeans are really resistant, buy high quality one ! Think about boots for your feet, getting tetanos because your sneakers were pierced by some metal wouldn't be that great... Gloves can be very usefull too, if you have to manipulate zombi corpse, it'll reduce the risk of infection. All of your equipment has to be very resistant, i mean you'll have the possibility to get some brand new, but avoiding shops and malls will be the for the best. Also, don't forget about the fireworks. They seem to be working fine as a kind of zombie flare and when they stop having any effect, they still make for a very nice and aesthetically pleasing way to go out as the zombies overrun your last fortifications. And what is it after all, that seperates us from those menial creatures crawling out of our secret labs but our sense for a dramatic finishing act.

Transport

We can make the difference between short range transport and high range.

Bicycle

This is the best transportation you'll find. As zombi can't run, you can easyly outrun them just by driving. A bike is not heavy, you can lift it to cross a river or a damaged area. Always have a small reparature kit on you, as you'll be exposed to broken glass and other dangerous obstacles

Habitation

Appartement

HaDiKo rooms are easily accessed by Zombies simply by smashing down the door. This has been proven to work reliably by zombie attack researchers at the HadDiKo. Your HaDiKo room is therefore not a good place for shelter. The EUFF kitchen has been designed to serve as a zombie bunker for elite HaDiKo inhabitants. It features a thick door opening only to the outside, which is more stable and allows for more flexibility when leaving the kitchen. It does not have a window and features refrigiators for long-term storage of emergency resources such as food and medical supplies.
